Buddhist Monks Strike Back, Demolish Muslim Shrine:
A group of Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka led a crowd that demolished a Muslim shrine last week, the BBC has learned.
This incident took place on Saturday in Anuradhapura, an ancient Buddhist city and Unesco world heritage site.
The monk who led the group told the BBC he did it because the shrine was on land that was given to Sinhalese Buddhists 2,000 years ago.
But a prominent Muslim in the area said he was very sad and the sentiment was shared by many Sinhalese too.
A Sri Lankan news website showed photographs of a crowd including monks apparently reducing a small structure to a pile of rubble.
The mob waved Buddhist flags and – in one picture – burnt a green Muslim flag.
There have been no other reports of what happened.
But a BBC has spoken to the monk, Amatha Dhamma Thero, who admits masterminding the demolition of the Muslim shrine.
He said he arranged a gathering of 100 or so monks, including some from other Asian countries, to take action because – he alleged – local Muslims were trying to convert the shrine into a mosque despite new constructions being illegal on this site with its many Buddhist temples.
He said local government officials arrived and said they would remove the shrine within three days, but the crowd said “we cannot wait” and proceeded to tear down the structure.
The demolition has been denounced by a local senior Muslim and a local Sinhalese politician.
‘Concerned’
The Muslim, Abdul Razack, denied that a mosque was planned and said the demolished shrine was about 300 years old and had attracted visitors of other faiths too.
He said local Muslims and Buddhists alike were concerned at what happened but Muslims had avoided the site on Saturday, fearing sectarian disharmony.
The politician, Aruna Dissanayake, said the government should act against those who had attacked the shrine.
A minority was trying to create sectarian problems in a place where most Muslims and Sinhalese Buddhists co-existed well, he added.
Most of Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhalese is Buddhist, and Muslims are regarded as a separate ethnic group.
In a recent newspaper column, a veteran Muslim journalist said there was a growing fear among his community that some people were running a campaign to incite the Sinhalese against them, including through Sinhalese websites and print media.

Thats the only way to treat muslimes. Attack first with no mercy. Thats the only thing that will stop them. They are afraid of truly aggressive people but dont have time for cowards. If you want then out of your country attack again and again, have pigs around to eat the muzzie dead and dogs to scare them away.
I agree with you ojayetsypay. Muslims have been creeping their way into other religious territory for centuries. It is their mark of victory over the other religious group, to place a mosque on non-muslim land. They are creeping through America, building mosques and schools, etc.. They migrate, don’t integrate, and segregate with the intention of gaining more and more territory to fulfill their world view of Islamic domination globally. As you said, You have to be forceful and ready to fight against them or they will continue to creep their way around the globe. I’ve noticed that when challenged and forced back, the muslims withdraw and take a step backwards. The only way to stop them is by use of force!!!

The same should happen to the Muslim Shrine built exactly on the spot where Solomon’s Holy Temple to God was erected in Jerusalem. I’m offended every time I see a picture of it.
This is unusual for buddhists but I am glad they did it. Muslims have no right taking over their temples. I studied buddism and it was very good for me.
I applaud the Buddhists. Time for turning the other cheek to the muslims is over. If we want our women to have a decent life we have to stand up. I hate violence but I do not believe my God said to allow these males of the muslim faith to enslave us. What infuriates me is watching what is done to Christians in Muslim countries. Protect our women.

As Buddhist’s are nonviolent ,it proves every one has a breaking point,for too long this ideology has been-tolerated ,it should never have been allowed to ingraite itself so far into -our culture’s and countries ,it is a culture that has no tolerance of any other religions ,and believes there is only one way -Islam ,they are entitleed to believe what they want -so are we,not accorcding to them ,their arrogance in demanding their cruel -male controlling -evil- Sharia Law only shows how ignorant and barbaric they are,they are taking over and controlling by -fear and -hate,it is already too late for some countries ,those nameless ,faceless politically correct people who kowtow to them will, one day ,realise what they have helped do -too late ,the only consolation for those suffering under this cruel ideology will be -they are also sharing the -misery and demise of a once happy free society.
