The U.S. military last week lost its first female member of a new elite group charged with establishing better relations with Afghan women.

Army 1st Lieutenant Ashley White was killed along with two other soldiers in southern Afghanistan by a roadside bomb while serving in a Cultural Support Team. Amnesty International says an Iranian actress sentenced to a year in jail and 90 lashes has been released.

Marzieh Vafamehr was arrested over her role in the film My Tehran For Sale, which had been banned by Iranian authorities.

The film was funded by the Adelaide Film Festival and South Australian Film Corporation, which have released a joint statement with producer Cyan Films and Amnesty International.
