A car bomb went off near two government offices in central Baghdad, killing at least 15 people and wounding more than 50, an Iraqi official said. Another official put the number at of deaths at 18.
Two police officials said the explosives-rigged car was parked near an office for Shiite Muslim religious affairs and the city’s health department in the Bab al-Muadham area, The Associated Press reported.

A new report says applications for asylum in the European Union increased by 16.2% in 2011 over the previous year, in part because of turmoil surrounding the Arab Spring uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East.
The report, issued Friday by the European Commission, the EU’s executive branch, says just over 302,000 people applied for asylum in 2011. That is still far fewer than the peak of 425,000 applications received in 2001.

Tasikmalaya, West Java, will soon require all Muslim women, residents and visitors alike, to wear veils to enforce its sharia ordinance.

Buddhist vigilantes in western Myanmar attacked a bus and killed nine Muslims, police said on Monday, the deadliest communal violence in the region since a reformist government took power a year ago.

A US drone strike targeting a militant compound in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal area killed 15 insurgents in a pre-dawn attack on Monday, security officials said.
Two missiles were fired on the compound in Mir Ali, 25 kilometres (15 miles) east of Miranshah, the capital of North Waziristan, near the Afghan border, in an area considered a hive of Taliban and Al Qaeda activity.

Four men were convicted Monday of planning a terrorist attack on a Danish newspaper that published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in 2005.
