US Special Envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Rashad Hussain (pictured) will attend the Fourth Extraordinary Session of the Islamic Summit Conference in Saudi Arabia, the State department announced late Monday.
Hussain is to travel August 14-15 to Mecca, Saudi Arabia as an observer, the State department said in a statement.
The Summit was called to discuss major issues in the Muslim world, including the crisis in Syria.
“Special Envoy Hussain’s attendance demonstrates the United States’ commitment to working with our partners in the international community to support the aspirations of the Syrian people and bring additional pressure to bear on the Assad regime,” according to the state department.
During his visit, Hussain will hold bilateral meetings to discuss a number of issues including Syria and the democratic transitions in the Middle East and North Africa.
Muslims number approximately 3 percent of the U.S population.
