An Egyptian man brutally beat his pregnant wife Friday after she took off her veil in an attempt to find relief from the scorching heat.
The woman, a 20-year-old from the town of Porto Empedocle in Sicily’s southern province of Agrigento, was taken to hospital for treatment.

At least six breakaway Muslim rebels have been killed in fresh fighting last night in Maguindanao, a military official said today.
Col. Prudencio Asto, spokesman for the military’s 6th Division, said the skirmish erupted after elements of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) harassed a military detachment in the town of Guindulungan in Maguindanao.
A fire fight ensued, according to Asto, leaving six dead on the enemy side.

A controversial rally marking Al-Quds Day and a counter-rally by the Jewish Defence League (JDL) met a group of expatriate Iranians in front of the Ontario legislature as part of the yearly exchange.

At least 50 suspected Taliban militants were killed Saturday when a pilotless NATO plane bombed Afghanistan’s eastern province of Kunar.
The drone targeted four vehicles in Shinallai area of Chapa Dara district around 1 p.m., killing the militants, that included 13 local commanders, police said.
Hattiqullah, the Taliban’s “shadowy police chief” for the district, and another leader Turabi were among those killed.

An 11-eleven-year old Christian girl was accused of blasphemy and arrested for allegedly burning pages of a Noorani Qaida, a booklet used to learn the basics of the Quran.
Officials of the Ramna Police Station said that the girl, named Rifta Masih, had burned a Noorani Qaida on August 16 and threw it in garbage after putting it in a plastic bag. Masih belonged to the rural area of Mehrabadi, which is next to the G-11 sector in Islamabad.

A teacher has been sentenced to 270 hours of community service for ‘gratuitous degradation’ of pupils at the Blackburn mosque he worked in.
