Hundreds of Myanmar Buddhist monks marched today in support of the president’s proposal to pack off members of the Muslim Rohingya minority to another country.
Violent clashes between Rohingya and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists left 80 people dead and many more displaced in June.
The marching monks held a banner that read: “Save your motherland Myanmar by supporting the president.”
President Thein Sein suggested in July that Myanmar sends all Rohingya to any country willing to take them but the proposal was quickly opposed by the UN refugee agency and has found no takers.
