The abrupt resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus reportedly means Michael Morell, the agency’s new acting director, will replace Petraeus in testifying about the Benghazi attack before a Senate committee next week.
In a letter of resignation accepted by the White House on Friday, Petraeus cited an extramarital affair in abruptly stepping down as head of the intelligence agency, saying he’d used “very poor judgment” after 37 years of marriage.
Petraeus had been CIA director since Sept. 6, 2011.
The resignation reportedly came after an unrelated FBI investigation found evidence of an affair.
Petraeus, the former commander of armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, had been expected to testify Thursday at a closed-door session of the Senate Intelligence Committee on the September terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.
Instead, Morell, who had been deputy director of the CIA, will take his place, citing the office of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the chair of the committee.
“I wish President Obama had not accepted this resignation, but I understand and respect the decision. David Petraeus is one of America’s best and brightest,” Feinstein said in a statement.
